Journalism Needs Entrepreneurs
Jose Zamora is a Journalism Program Associate at Knight Foundation
Digital journalists covering local communities find digital skills extremely useful, but understanding how to run a business, including budgeting, revenue generation, social networking and marketing is equally important.
The Knight Digital Media Center designed an intense one-week boot camp where bloggers, journalists and citizens interested in launching a local news and information site can acquire all these skills. The all-expenses-paid program starts by covering the following topics:
- Developing a sustainable business plan.
- Marketing and audience development.
- Content production and management models.
- Legal and tax issues.
- Identifying capitalization sources.
- Developing and implementing
If you are interested in learning more about the News Entrepreneur Bootcamp, when the next program starts and how you can apply you can sign-up at the Knight Digital Media Center.

I attended Bootcamp this past year and had an amazing time. On the first day I said to a colleague, "I can't believe I'm not paying for this - because I would!"
The lessons, experience, and contacts you will learn and gain are well worth it.

The bootcamp was total immersion in everything you need to know as an entrepreneurial journalist. Come in with an idea and a business plan, and expect it to be put through the wringer from a journalistic and business standpoint.
I felt like I gained traction in the six days of the bootcamp that would have taken much longer without the experience. InvestigateWest, my investigative reporting group, certainly benefited from bootcamp.

This was a terrific program - lots of useful information about all aspects of running a successful online news operation. But the most valuable thing that I took away from the experience is that I now think much more strategically about content, audience and revenue, and what we need to do to make the Twin Cities Daily Planet sustainable and successful.
